November 2020
This month’s cover features Karita Mattila starring in Covid fan tutte in Helsinki, where Finnish National Opera responded to the current health crisis by putting on a show that addressed contemporary news and utilized several outstanding artists who had previously been scheduled to appear in other projects at the end of summer. It’s one of many live reviews we publish in this issue as theatres find ways of reopening their doors.
Our features this month address the current situation while looking both at possible futures and deep into operatic history:

Great singers in the great roles: Sherrill Milnes on being Rigoletto
English Touring Opera’s James Conway on rethinking the season
Singing Tristan and Isolde: Ben Heppner, Stuart Skelton, Jane Eaglen and Christine Goerke

Changing fashions: Meyerbeer and Gounod
A Malcolm Arnold opera is recorded

Our ‘For the record’ guest this month is Joyce DiDonato and our ‘Disc of the month’ is Peter Grimes on Chandos.
